The difference between Cleaning, Sanitizing and Disinfecting

You’ve probably heard the terms cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting a lot to describe the same thing—but the actual process behind each are very different. During a pandemic, it’s especially important to know the difference, as well as how they work together.

Cleaning is the physical process of removing dirt. Cleaning can be done with or without a cleaning product and includes anything from wiping a surface with a wet rag to dusting or vacuuming. The goal is to remove debris from a surface but does not involve killing germs.

Sanitizing is a more aggressive kind of cleaning. Essentially, germs are removed to a low enough level that is deemed safe by public health standards, but only some germs are killed.

Disinfecting utilizes chemicals to kill the germs. While it doesn’t necessarily clean dirty surfaces or physically remove the germs, killing the germs lowers the risk of spreading the germs and infecting others. A disinfectant can be any EPA-approved chemical that has a 99.9% kill rate. This means that bacteria or viruses essentially don’t stand a chance against these chemicals. However, to reach the 99.9% rate, disinfectant require specific dwell times (see more about “dwell times” below).

In order to be most effective against viruses, like SARS-CoV-2 (aka Covid-19), the CDC recommends cleaning a surface first, to remove excess dirt and debris, and then disinfecting that surface with a product from List N: Disinfectants for use against SARs-CoV-2.

WHY? Because to be effective, a disinfecting solution needs to touch the surface. So if you haven’t cleaned the surface first, and removed any dirt, dust or other debris first, the disinfectant may settle on those particles and not the germs.

What is “dwell time”?

Dwell time is the amount of time a disinfecting product needs to remain wet on a surface in order for the product to be able to do it’s full job in killing pathogens on the surface. Remember: If it’s wet, it’s working!

What can I do to make my office a healthier space?

  • Make sure your surfaces are cleaned and disinfected regularly.
  • Create sanitation stations at the entrance to the building, as well as highly frequented areas like breakrooms and bathrooms.
  • Provide cleaning and disinfecting products for your employees to keep at their desk to sanitize their own work areas when they start each day.
  • Encourage your employees to stay home if they, or a member of their household, are feeling unwell.
  • If an employee tests positive, make sure to have their work area and any area the spent time in, properly disinfected by an outbreak disinfection specialist to make sure the proper steps and precautions are taken.

What is electrostatic spraying?

Electrostatic sprayers utilize a powered “gun” to apply a liquid disinfecting solution. The nozzle on the sprayer creates a mist that is electrostatically charged as it exits the barrel, meaning the droplets in the mist will stick to the surfaces they touch.

Why is electrostatic spraying so popular in fighting Covid-19?

Electrostatics sprayers are fast, efficient and effective at ensuring even surface distribution of disinfecting products. Their ability to spread smaller particles more evenly, with a charge that attracts those particles into nooks and crannies of surfaces is

Why is the Clorox® Total 360® Electrostatic System better than the hand-held or backpack sprayers that other companies have?

We utilize the Clorox® Total 360® Electrostatic System in our enhanced cleaning and disinfecting program because it is the best. The main difference is in the power of the electrostatic charge. Other sprayers, including the hand-held and backpack models, utilize a battery to power their mister. The Clorox® Total 360® Electrostatic System, by not being battery powered, can create a stronger electrostatic charge when dispensing its solutions, so the droplets of the mist don’t just stick to surfaces, they are attracted to surfaces from all sides. This means that the droplets don’t just stick to the front of an object, but they defy gravity and stick to the sides and back as well. That’s why it’s called the Total 360®—it attaches to items from 360 degrees.
